Cuban natives Jorge M. Hernández Torres and Larry J. González Ortiz, artists featured in On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection, give us some insight on their piece “Unique Pieces from the Collection: Relics of the Tatar Princess”
Jorge & Larry were selected by Artist X Artist as beneficiary of one of the two residences granted in 2016 for the Matadero Madrid residency program. They have participated in collective shows such as ARTIST X ARTIST, Collateral to the XII Biennial of Havana (2015); SANS SERIF, Kesselhaus Bethanien – to name a few.
Inspired by their lives in Cuba, they approach self-referential themes of art, literature and music with a certain freshness and irony. They also posesses a strong versatility and mastery of different mediums ranging from painting, collage, installation or sculpture. Together, they investigate the consumption of visual culture in the present day.
Their piece, Piezas únicas de la colección: Reliquias de la princesa tártara [Unique Pieces from the Collection: Relics of the Tatar Princess] is a mixed media installation that compares Cuba’s historical relationship with the Soviet Union and Russia’s contemporary relationship to Cuba, from a political point of view.
