Juan Carlos Alom: “Nacido Para Ser Libre”

Juan Carlos Alom is a photographer and experimental filmmaker from Havana, Cuba. The collapse of the Soviet Union occurred when he’d just begun his artistic career, which pushed him to become innovative and experimental with the way he approached the creation of his work. Through his work, Alom seeks to capture and document the “impossible”, aiming to translate his experiences and life in Cuba into a physical form.

His current work displayed in the museum’s On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M.  Pérez Collection exhibition is titled Nacido Para Ser Libre [Born to be free]. It is a collection of photographs the artist took of native Cuban elders at a beach called La Playa Dieciséis [Beach 16]. Through these photographs, Alom is honoring his elders and acknowledging how the conversations he shared with them enabled him to rediscover himself.

The series will be on display until September 10, 2017.
